The Subaru WRX years that deserve the most targeted pre-purchase checks are 2008, 2012-2014, and manual-transmission 2015-2018 models. These groups are not equally risky: Subaru issued a safety recall for the 2008 WRX turbo oil supply pipe, extended crankshaft-bearing warranty coverage on the 2012-2014 WRX, and introduced more durable clutch parts during the 2018 model year.
That does not make every car from those years a bad purchase. It tells you which repair records, parts, and symptoms to investigate. A modified or poorly repaired WRX from a supposedly better year can still be the worse car.
This guide covers the regular U.S.-market WRX. The STI has different engine and drivetrain applications, so do not apply every year range here to an STI.

These records identify inspection priorities, not failure rates. A service bulletin does not mean every covered vehicle has the described condition.
2012-2014 WRX: the strongest engine-related caution
Subaru service bulletin 02-181-19 is the clearest reason to scrutinize the 2012-2014 WRX. It extended warranty coverage on the original 2.5-liter turbo EJ short block from 5 years/60,000 miles to 8 years/100,000 miles. Subaru said the extension responded to an identified condition that could lead to isolated crankshaft main-bearing or connecting-rod-bearing failures.
That coverage has expired based on time for these cars, but the bulletin remains useful when shopping. Ask whether the engine is original, replaced by Subaru, rebuilt by another shop, or sourced used. Match invoices to the VIN and check whether the replacement included only a short block or additional oiling, turbo, and cylinder-head work.
During a cold start and test drive, investigate:
- a deep knock that follows engine speed;
- metallic debris documented in used-oil analysis or repair records;
- an oil-pressure warning or previous low-oil event;
- an unexplained short-block, crankshaft, or connecting-rod replacement;
- a tune, boost-control change, larger turbo, or evidence that such parts were removed;
- persistent smoke, misfires, or abnormal oil consumption.
Injector tick, valvetrain noise, or a recording alone cannot confirm a bearing failure. If the engine makes a deep knock or the oil-pressure warning appears, shut it off and have a Subaru specialist diagnose it.

2015-2018 manual WRX: inspect the clutch system
Subaru bulletin 03-79-18 applies to manual-transmission 2015-2018 WRXs. It introduced a larger flywheel, clutch cover, and clutch disc, along with a revised release bearing and pedal assembly. Subaru described the change as improving durability and resistance to severe driving conditions, including high-temperature operation.
The revised components entered production during the 2018 model year beginning with VIN J*806877. That makes “2015 and 2016 are the bad clutch years” too narrow. A 2017 or early-production 2018 car can have the earlier hardware, while an older car may already have received the revised parts.
On a test drive, check:
- clutch slip under load in a higher gear;
- shudder, chatter, or inconsistent engagement from a stop;
- squealing, chirping, or grinding that changes as the clutch pedal moves;
- abnormal pedal effort, travel, or return;
- repair records for the disc, cover, flywheel, release bearing, and pedal assembly;
- repeat clutch replacements at low mileage.
Keep clutch symptoms separate from gearbox faults. Engine speed rising without matching acceleration points toward clutch slip. Grinding during a shift, a gear that pops out, or persistent transmission whine requires a different diagnosis.
Subaru said the revised parts improve durability but also directed technicians to consider driving and usage conditions when failures repeat or occur at low mileage. A replacement invoice is therefore useful, but you still need to understand why the work was required and which parts were installed.
What about the 2015-2018 CVT?
The manual-clutch bulletin does not apply to the CVT. During tight, low-speed turns, check a CVT car for shudder or chatter from the AWD transfer clutch. Subaru bulletin 16-120-19 covers that symptom on 2015-2019 WRXs with the TR690 CVT and tells technicians to check diagnostic codes and tire circumference before performing the prescribed break-in procedure.
Delayed engagement, warning lights, unusual whine, or shudder during ordinary acceleration needs separate diagnosis. Do not describe an AWD transfer-clutch symptom as a manual-clutch failure.
2008 WRX: verify the turbo oil-pipe recall
Subaru recall WVF-16 applies to certain 2008 Impreza WRXs, but not the STI. The turbocharger oil supply pipe could have been deformed during assembly. Subaru warned that vibration could eventually crack the pipe, allowing oil to leak onto hot components and create a fire risk.
Check the VIN through NHTSA or Subaru and confirm that the recall inspection and repair were completed. Subaru’s remedy was to inspect the pipe, install a support bracket when alignment was correct, or replace a deformed pipe.
The recall is a specific reason to check a 2008 car; the softer factory suspension and lower output of the regular 2008 WRX compared with the updated 2009 are preference and performance issues, not proof of poor reliability.
Why the 2008 WRX is unpopular with some enthusiasts
The 2008 regular WRX also gets criticized for its styling and chassis tuning. Its larger, rounded body and subdued trim looked less aggressive to some buyers than the earlier WRX models, while road tests described the new suspension as softly sprung for a performance car.
Subaru responded for 2009 with a retuned suspension and sharper exterior treatment, so a buyer comparing otherwise similar cars may prefer the 2009 for steering response and appearance. That is a legitimate performance and styling preference, not a mechanical defect in every 2008 WRX; the softer setup can also make a stock car more comfortable on ordinary roads.
Age now adds more important purchase questions. Inspect a 2008 WRX for rust, timing-belt service, oil and coolant leaks, turbo condition, engine replacement history, clutch and transmission behavior, and undocumented modifications. Confirm any claim about an engine replacement with an itemized invoice.
Should you avoid an early-production 2009 WRX?
Early 2009 WRXs appear frequently in owner discussions about low-mileage connecting-rod-bearing failures. Subaru service material for remanufactured turbo long blocks also references connecting-rod-bearing repair authorization for 2008-2009 2.5-liter turbo WRXs.
That evidence supports extra investigation, but it does not establish that every early 2009 car has a defective engine. Ask for the build date, original-engine status, and complete engine-repair history. Investigate any unexplained short-block replacement or current knocking noise. At this age, oil history, modifications, repair quality, and rust can outweigh the original model-year concern.
Are 2009-2011 and 2019-2021 WRXs better choices?
These years avoid the specific 2012-2014 bearing warranty-extension range. The 2019-2021 cars also received the later manual-clutch hardware from the factory. They are sensible places to start shopping if two cars have comparable condition and records.
They are not blanket recommendations. A 2009-2011 WRX is still an older EJ-powered car that needs timing-belt, engine-health, turbo, rust, and drivetrain checks. A 2019-2021 WRX still needs its tune, installed hardware, oil history, intake and charge-air plumbing, clutch or CVT, tires, accident history, and recalls inspected.

Records and checks that can change the verdict
Before making an offer:
- Confirm the VIN, build date, trim, engine, and transmission.
- Check open recalls by VIN rather than assuming a campaign was completed.
- Match engine, clutch, turbo, and transmission invoices to the car.
- Identify every current and previous engine or boost-control modification and its calibration.
- Inspect the car cold, scan stored and pending codes, and complete a controlled test drive.
- Check oil level, leaks, coolant condition, four matching tires, and structural rust.
- Have a Subaru-focused shop investigate abnormal noise, smoke, misfires, clutch slip, gear grinding, CVT warnings, or an incomplete engine history.
Compression and leakdown tests can identify sealing problems, but they do not directly prove that crankshaft bearings are healthy.
