The Subaru WRX and WRX STI share a name, a turbocharged boxer layout, all-wheel drive, and a huge enthusiast following. They are not the same car, though. The STI name comes from Subaru Tecnica International, Subaru’s motorsport and performance company. The STI adds a stronger performance drivetrain, more advanced differential control, bigger brakes, sharper steering, and firmer suspension. The regular WRX is usually cheaper, easier to live with, and better suited to daily driving.
Quick answer: Buy the WRX if you want an AWD performance daily driver, lower operating costs, a newer VB chassis, or a car you plan to modify moderately. Buy the STI if you specifically want its six-speed transmission, DCCD, limited-slip differentials, Brembo brakes, sharper chassis, and more focused driving experience. A clean, documented WRX is a better purchase than an abused STI, and a well-maintained STI is a different machine rather than simply a more powerful WRX.
The most important detail is the generation. A 2015-2021 VA WRX and VA STI can be compared directly, while a 2022+ VB WRX has no factory STI counterpart. A new VB WRX versus a used VA STI is therefore a new-versus-used and FA24-versus-EJ257 decision, not a simple trim comparison.

These are U.S.-market factory ratings for standard models. Limited editions such as the STI Type RA and S209 have different output. EPA combined mileage is included for the VA and VB cars discussed most often in current comparisons.

Car and Driver recorded 5.2 seconds to 60 mph for a manual 2020 WRX, 5.3 seconds for a 2018 STI, 5.5 seconds for a manual 2022 WRX, and 5.4 seconds for a 2022 WRX GT with the SPT. The 2018 STI result was unusually slow; the same publication recorded 4.8 seconds from an earlier VA STI. Launch technique and the STI’s extra shift before 60 mph can produce large differences between tests. The STI’s more consistent advantages are its transmission, differentials, brakes, steering, and performance during repeated hard driving.
For fuel economy, the WRX has the clear advantage. The 2021 manual WRX was rated at 23 mpg combined versus 19 mpg for the 2021 STI. The VB WRX is rated at 22 mpg combined with the manual and 21 mpg with the SPT in the examples above.

What is the difference between a WRX and STI?
The STI is not just a WRX with a larger turbo or a more aggressive tune. It is engineered around a more capable performance drivetrain and chassis. Depending on generation, the STI adds a six-speed manual transmission, DCCD, front and rear limited-slip differentials, stronger drivetrain components, Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension, quicker steering, and more track-oriented calibration.
The WRX is the broader-use car. It still has a turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive, but it is generally lighter on operating costs, more forgiving over rough roads, and easier to use in traffic. Some WRXs also offer a CVT or Subaru Performance Transmission, while modern U.S.-market STIs are manual-only.

WRX vs. STI by generation
2002-2007 GD WRX and STI
The early U.S.-market GD cars use EJ-series turbo engines, but the exact engine, turbocharger, body style, transmission, and equipment vary by year. The STI generally brings the more serious drivetrain, six-speed transmission, DCCD, stronger differentials, larger brakes, and a stiffer chassis setup.
Condition matters more than the badge on a car this old. Check for rust, incomplete engine swaps, wiring changes, accident repairs, and undocumented tuning.
2008-2014 GR/GV WRX and STI
The widebody GR/GV generation made the visual and mechanical separation more obvious. The STI received its familiar six-speed drivetrain, DCCD, stronger differentials, Brembo brakes, and more focused suspension. The WRX gained its own turbocharged EJ engine and, in many applications, a five-speed manual.
The hatchback and sedan body styles add another buying decision. A WRX hatch can be a practical daily driver, while an STI hatch combines useful cargo space with the more expensive STI drivetrain.
2015-2021 VA WRX and STI
This is the most common direct comparison in the used market.
The VA WRX uses the FA20DIT, a 2.0-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine. The VA STI uses the EJ257, a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with a different engine architecture, fueling strategy, maintenance pattern, and tuning history. Every U.S.-market VA WRX has a six-speed manual as standard, with a CVT available on some trims. The STI uses its own six-speed manual.
The STI’s key hardware advantages are its stronger six-speed drivetrain, DCCD, front and rear limited-slip differentials, Brembo brakes, stiffer suspension, and more direct steering feel. The WRX’s advantages are lower weight, a broader low-rpm torque character, better fuel economy, softer ride, and lower purchase and maintenance costs.

2022-current VB WRX
The VB WRX uses the FA24DIT, a 2.4-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine. Subaru’s current U.S. specifications list 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed manual or Subaru Performance Transmission depending on trim. See Subaru’s current WRX specifications.
There is no production VB WRX STI to compare against. A buyer choosing between a current VB WRX and a VA STI is deciding between a newer FA24 car with warranty and modern equipment and an older EJ257 car with the STI drivetrain and chassis hardware. The newer WRX is not a replacement STI in every mechanical sense, and the used STI is not automatically the smarter performance purchase.

Factory output is only one part of the comparison.

The FA20DIT and FA24DIT are not simply smaller and larger versions of the EJ257. The engine management, fuel system, torque curve, intercooler layout, tuning tools, and common diagnostic questions differ. Peak horsepower also does not tell you how a car feels. The WRX’s torque delivery can make it easy to drive in traffic, while the STI’s gearing, turbo response, steering, and differentials make it feel more serious even when the acceleration difference is smaller than expected.
Transmission and AWD differences
This is the section that should decide the purchase for many enthusiasts.
WRX transmission and AWD
WRX transmission hardware varies by generation. U.S.-market WRXs through 2014 used a five-speed manual, the 2015-2021 VA introduced a six-speed manual, and the VB continues with a six-speed manual. Some VA trims used Subaru’s Sport Lineartronic CVT; the VB automatic is marketed as the Subaru Performance Transmission, or SPT. The AWD hardware also differs between manual and CVT/SPT cars.
The manual WRX is usually easier to drive smoothly than an STI in traffic. It can also be less expensive to repair. CVT and SPT cars have different AWD hardware, service needs, and tuning limits from manual WRXs.
STI transmission and DCCD
The modern STI six-speed is one of the main reasons to buy the car. It is paired with a more performance-oriented AWD system, including DCCD and limited-slip differential hardware. DCCD lets the driver influence center-differential behavior, which matters more during aggressive cornering, loose surfaces, and track use than during ordinary commuting. When buying an STI, check for gear pop-out, synchro crunch, unusual whine, leaks, and DCCD warning lights. Repeated launches and high engine torque can still damage the six-speed, clutch, axles, or differentials.

Brakes, suspension, and steering
The STI’s chassis hardware is a real upgrade, not just visual trim.
Modern STI advantages commonly include:
- Brembo performance brakes with larger rotors and more aggressive thermal capacity.
- Stiffer springs, dampers, bushings, and anti-roll-bar tuning.
- Quicker or more communicative steering, depending on generation.
- More aggressive factory tires and wheel packages.
- DCCD and limited-slip differential control.
Those parts are valuable if you track the car, drive mountain roads quickly, or care about steering and corner-exit traction. They are less valuable if your normal use is commuting over broken pavement. STI brake pads, rotors, tires, and suspension parts also cost more, and the harder setup can make the car less comfortable.
A WRX can be improved with tires, brake pads and fluid, alignment, dampers, and suspension parts. The result can be excellent, but adding STI-like hardware after purchase is not always cheaper than buying a clean STI in the first place. Price the parts, labor, maintenance, and fitment before deciding.
Which is better for daily driving?
The WRX is usually the better daily driver.
It tends to offer:

- Easier clutch and low-speed behavior.

- More affordable used examples.
- CVT or SPT availability for buyers who do not want a manual.

The STI is still practical enough for daily use, but it feels more deliberate. The clutch, gearing, steering, suspension, road noise, and fuel consumption all remind you that it was developed around performance first. Some drivers love that every day; others find that the WRX is more enjoyable because it asks less of them.
Which is more reliable: WRX or STI?
There is no universal answer because the comparison crosses engines, years, mileage, and ownership histories.
The WRX generally has the lower risk when comparing a newer, stock or lightly modified car with complete records against an older, heavily used STI. Buy the VB WRX instead of a VA STI if you want newer-car ownership
A VB WRX may be the better choice if you want a newer interior, current safety systems, warranty coverage where applicable, lower mileage, and a modern FA24 platform. You will not get factory DCCD, STI differentials, or an STI chassis, but you may get a more usable car with fewer age-related risks.
Buy a VA STI instead of a VB WRX if the drivetrain is the point
A VA STI makes more sense when the transmission, DCCD, Brembo brakes, steering, and STI character are the reason you are shopping. Accept that it is an older used performance car with EJ257-specific maintenance and an unknown previous life unless the records prove otherwise.
