A 2007, 2017, and 2023 WRX can all wear the “automatic” label, but that one word hides three very different transmissions. The early car has a conventional four-speed automatic, the VA uses a Sport Lineartronic CVT, and the VB gets Subaru Performance Transmission, or SPT. There was no automatic regular U.S. WRX at all from 2009 through 2014.
That split changes what a symptom means. A hard shift in a 4EAT, a P0841 code on a VA CVT, and a shudder in a VB SPT do not point to the same repair. Start with the model-year table, then use the matching section to plan the road test, module scan, tire check, and service-record review.

Which WRXs have an automatic transmission?

The 2002-2007 automatic WRX combines a planetary center differential with a hydraulically controlled transfer clutch. The 2008 automatic instead uses Active AWD with an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch. Subaru’s 2008 brochure documents that change, so an AWD diagnosis from an earlier 4EAT should not be copied into a 2008 car. The automatic returned for 2015 as Subaru’s Sport Lineartronic CVT. For 2022, Subaru introduced the SPT name, paddle controls, and an eight-speed manual mode. Is an automatic WRX a CVT?
Not always. The 2002-2008 automatic WRXs use a four-speed automatic. The 2015-2021 WRX uses a CVT marketed as Sport Lineartronic, while the 2022+ SPT is Subaru’s later CVT-based automatic application.

2002-2007 WRX 4EAT: what to check
Start with the moments when an old automatic tends to reveal its condition: selecting Drive or Reverse, shifting before and after it warms up, and pulling away with light throttle. A flare between shifts, a hard engagement, a delay after selecting a range, or a new whine deserves diagnosis. None of those sensations proves the gearbox needs replacement on its own. Fluid level, engine operation, mounts, and the AWD system can all change what reaches the driver’s seat.
Tight-turn binding on a 2002-2007 automatic WRX
If an older automatic WRX bucks or binds during a tight parking-lot turn, resist jumping straight to “bad transmission.” Compare the size, model, wear, and measured circumference of all four tires, then follow the VTD diagnostic path. The car’s exact owner manual and service information should control ATF type and level-check procedure. Older 4EAT fluid checks are temperature-sensitive, and an incorrect level can create a misleading shift complaint.
2008 WRX 4EAT: similar gearbox, different AWD path
The 2008 WRX also offers a four-speed SPORTSHIFT automatic, but its Active AWD system uses an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch rather than the earlier WRX VTD layout. On a test drive, the important question is when the symptom appears. A vibration confined to tight turns points the inspection toward the transfer clutch, AWD system, and tires. A jolt during a gear change or a vibration tied to engine speed sends the diagnosis elsewhere. Check shift quality and leaks too, but do not treat every shudder as the same fault.
VA WRX CVT problems: 2015-2021
The VA CVT does not fail in one universal way. The exact code and the conditions surrounding it decide whether the diagnostic path leads toward pressure data, wiring, a control valve, or internal transmission work.
P0841 and the control valve
Subaru bulletin 16-102-16R provides a diagnostic path for P0841 on 2015-2021 CVT-equipped WRXs. The procedure begins with fluid condition, customer symptom details, code confirmation, electrical checks, stored transmission pressure data, and then the appropriate repair decision. For 2015-2017 WRXs, Subaru also published a control-valve design change intended to prevent limited cases of aerated fluid causing false P0841 detection or AT Temp-light illumination. Solenoid-related codes
The CVT has separate factory diagnostic paths for pressure-control-solenoid codes. Subaru bulletin 16-131-20R covers specified solenoid DTCs for 2015-2020 WRXs and warns technicians to follow the applicable service-manual procedure rather than treating all code groups alike. VB WRX SPT problems: 2022+
The SPT has not been on the road long enough for a defensible lifetime reliability verdict. Judge a used one by what can be checked now: repeatable symptoms, stored codes, service and modification records, and the software or campaign status for that VIN.
Subaru bulletin 16-151-24R applies to 2022+ automatic WRXs and provides a diagnostic framework for TR690 chain-slip feelings, judder, shudder, and hesitation. It separates symptoms that occur while driving straight, while turning, and in both conditions. For applicable 2023-2024 WRXs, bulletin 16-150-24 covers a TCM software update for a jerk or judder during braking with air conditioning on, or a shudder accompanied by a screeching-type sound. What is normal SPT behavior?
SPT programming can raise engine speed, step through simulated ratios, and downshift before a corner. Feeling one of those programmed responses is not enough to call the transmission faulty. When the behavior feels wrong, record road speed, throttle input, temperature, drive mode, warning messages, and whether it happens straight ahead or only while turning. “Shudders at 30 mph with light throttle after warming up” gives a shop something it can reproduce; “the CVT feels weird” does not.

Is the automatic WRX reliable?
There is no single reliability verdict for every automatic WRX. A clean-shifting 4EAT with matched tires presents a different risk from a VA carrying an unresolved P0841 code or an SPT with repeatable judder. For the 4EAT, prioritize engagement, warm shift quality, leaks, and tight-turn behavior. For the VA CVT, inspect code history and control-valve records. For the VB SPT, document any repeatable hesitation and confirm applicable TCM updates. Subaru’s bulletins show technicians what to diagnose; they do not establish how often every transmission fails.
Automatic WRX maintenance and modifications

On a modified automatic WRX, the parts list only tells half the story. Ask for the calibration file or tuner invoice, fuel used, transmission service records, and how the car was driven. More engine torque, repeated launches, sustained heat, and unknown software all change the load history a buyer or diagnostic shop must evaluate.
Used automatic WRX inspection checklist
- Confirm the VIN, model year, trim, and fitted transmission.
- Compare all four tires for size, model, wear, and measured circumference.
- Check the service file for fluid work and prior transmission repairs.
- Scan engine and transmission modules for stored and pending codes before clearing anything.
- Drive the car cold and warm. Test Park-to-Drive and Park-to-Reverse engagement, light throttle, moderate acceleration, and low-speed turns.
- Note exact conditions for any shudder, whine, delay, warning message, or inconsistent response.

Not in the U.S.-market WRX STI range covered here. The 2021 U.S. brochure lists the STI with a six-speed manual, while Sport Lineartronic is offered on regular WRX trims. Is a tuned automatic WRX safe to buy?
Yes, when the hardware, calibration, fuel, service history, and current diagnostic results form a coherent record. An unknown tune, recently removed parts, or a seller who cannot identify the calibration leaves too much of the drivetrain’s load history unexplained.
