2015-2021 VA WRX maintenance schedule

The VA WRX uses the FA20DIT direct-injection turbo engine. It has no timing belt, but it does have a turbocharger, direct-injection intake valves, an intercooler system, and a manual or CVT drivetrain that deserves regular inspection.

Every 6 months or 6,000 miles

  • Replace the engine oil and filter.
  • Check the oil level again after driving and look for leaks around the filter, drain plug, oil pan, turbo oil lines, and valve-cover area.
  • Inspect the tires, tread wear, tire pressures, brake pads, rotors, and visible suspension components.
  • Check coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid on manual cars, windshield washer fluid, and battery condition.
  • Look over intercooler couplers, intake hoses, vacuum lines, and the turbo inlet for loose clamps or cracks.

The VA interval changes within the generation: Subaru’s 2016 schedule lists brake and clutch fluid at 24,000 miles or 24 months, while the 2019 and 2020 schedules use 30,000 miles or 24 months. Every 12,000 miles or annually

  • Rotate and inspect the tires.
  • Inspect the engine air filter and cabin air filter.
  • Inspect brake pad thickness, rotor condition, brake lines, and parking-brake operation.
  • Inspect the steering and suspension for play, leaking dampers, worn bushings, and damaged boots.
  • Check the alignment if the steering wheel is off-center, the car pulls, or the tires are wearing on one edge.

Do not wait for a scheduled service if the car has developed a pull, vibration, clunk, new tire noise, or uneven tread wear. AWD cars are especially sensitive to mismatched tire diameter, so replace tires as a matched set when tread-depth differences become significant.

Brake and clutch fluid: 24 months; 24,000 miles in 2016, 30,000 miles in 2019-2021

The FA20 is direct injected, so fuel does not wash the back of the intake valves in the same way it does on a port-injected engine. Transmission and differential inspection: 48,000 miles in 2016, 60,000 miles in 2019-2021

  • Service the manual transmission gear oil and front/rear differential gear oil according to the vehicle’s maintenance booklet.
  • Replace the engine air filter if it has not already been replaced.
  • Inspect the clutch, shifter cables, CVT system if equipped, axles, wheel bearings, and suspension more closely.
  • Replace spark plugs at the exact model-year interval if they are due.

2022+ VB WRX maintenance schedule

The VB WRX uses the FA24DIT and is available with a six-speed manual transmission or Subaru Performance Transmission, depending on trim and model year. The broad maintenance pattern remains familiar: oil, tires, brakes, filters, fluids, and inspections. The correct fluid and service procedure still depend on the transmission fitted to the car.   • Inspect the tires, brakes, suspension, axles, steering, and underbody.

Check the FA24’s oil on level ground, use the dipstick correctly, and investigate a falling level rather than simply topping it off forever. If the car is tuned, monitor oil level and engine behavior more closely and keep records of every service.

At the transmission, differential, and spark-plug intervals

Older WRX models use EJ-series engines with different maintenance concerns from the FA20 and FA24. The biggest scheduling difference is the timing belt: EJ engines use a belt, not a chain.

The schedule below is a useful factory baseline for a U.S.-market 2002-2014 EJ WRX. It follows Subaru’s published 2014 schedule, which lists 7,500-mile oil service, 30,000-mile inspections and brake/clutch-fluid replacement, 45,000-mile air-filter replacement, 60,000-mile drivetrain-fluid inspection, 90,000-mile spark plugs, and a 105,000-mile timing-belt replacement. The 2014 schedule lists gear oil as an inspection at 60,000 miles rather than a universal replacement. For an old WRX with unknown records, replacing the transmission and differential fluids is a sensible catch-up service after checking the correct fluid and fill procedure. On a car that sees track days, launches, rally-style use, or severe winter/mountain conditions, use the severe-service guidance instead of waiting for the normal interval.

Severe-service EJ intervals

Subaru’s older maintenance booklet defines severe conditions broadly: repeated short trips, dusty or muddy roads, extreme temperatures, road salt, coastal exposure, and similar use. In the 2011 official booklet, Subaru specifies:

  • Engine oil and filter every 3,750 miles or 3.75 months.
  • Transmission and differential gear-oil replacement every 15,000 miles when frequently operated under severe conditions.
  • Brake fluid every 15,000 miles or 15 months in high-humidity or mountainous areas.
  • Vehicle inspections every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months under severe conditions.

  • Engine oil level and oil-pressure warning signs.
  • Timing belt, tensioner, idler, and water-pump history.
  • Turbo oil lines, banjo filters where applicable, and oil leaks.
  • Coolant hoses, radiator condition, and overheating history.
  • Spark plugs and ignition coils.
  • Compression and leakdown results on a high-mileage or modified engine.
  • Manual transmission and differential fluid condition.
  • Clutch engagement, release bearing noise, and gear synchro behavior.

An EJ car with no maintenance records should be treated as a catch-up project. A timing-belt sticker alone does not prove the water pump, tensioner, idlers, cam seals, and crank seal were serviced correctly. 2004-2021 WRX STI maintenance schedule

The U.S.-market WRX STI uses the EJ-series turbo engine through the 2021 model year. Its maintenance plan overlaps with the EJ WRX schedule, but the STI adds a six-speed manual drivetrain, DCCD center-differential control, front and rear limited-slip differentials, and Brembo brakes. Inspect those systems separately during major service. For a used STI with incomplete records, prioritize the timing-belt documentation, compression and leakdown evidence when condition warrants it, oil-pressure history, transmission and differential fluid condition, clutch behavior, DCCD warning lights, Brembo brake condition, tire matching, and evidence of launches or track use. A clean engine bay or a recent oil change does not establish the condition of the drivetrain.

STI service items that change the budget

The expensive STI maintenance events are usually tied to access and parts, not the routine oil change. Price these items separately when assessing a used car:
