2015–2021 VA WRX maintenance schedule

The VA WRX uses the FA20DIT direct-injection turbo engine. It has no timing belt, but it does have a turbocharger, direct-injection intake valves, an intercooler system, and a manual or CVT drivetrain that deserves regular inspection.

Every 6 months or 6,000 miles

The factory interval is a reasonable maximum for a stock daily driver. For a tuned VA WRX, many owners choose a shorter oil interval because oil level, fuel dilution, heat, and driving style have more influence than the calendar alone. Do not wait for a scheduled service if the car has developed a pull, vibration, clunk, new tire noise, or uneven tread wear. AWD cars are especially sensitive to mismatched tire diameter, so replace tires as a matched set when tread-depth differences become significant.

Every 24 months or around 30,000 miles

The FA20 is direct injected, so fuel does not wash the back of the intake valves in the same way it does on a port-injected engine. If the car has rough idle, cold-start misfires, hesitation, or power loss, add intake-valve carbon inspection to the diagnostic plan. Gear-oil service is more important on a modified or aggressively driven VA WRX than the phrase “lifetime fluid” might suggest. It cannot repair worn synchros or a damaged differential, but fresh fluid and an inspection can reveal metallic debris, leaks, or a developing problem before it becomes a drivetrain failure.

2022+ VB WRX maintenance schedule

The VB WRX uses the FA24DIT and is available with a six-speed manual transmission or Subaru Performance Transmission, depending on trim and model year. The broad maintenance pattern remains familiar: oil, tires, brakes, filters, fluids, and inspections. The correct fluid and service procedure still depend on the transmission fitted to the car.

The FA24 has more displacement and torque than the VA WRX’s FA20, but that does not make oil checks optional. The VB’s factory intercooler is different from the VA’s top-mount layout, but the same diagnostic principle applies: loose charge-air connections can cause poor boost control, drivability problems, and confusing datalogs. Older EJ WRX and STI maintenance schedule

Older WRX models and 2004–2021 STI models use EJ-series engines with different maintenance concerns from the FA20 and FA24. The biggest scheduling difference is the timing belt: EJ engines use a belt, not a chain.

The schedule below is a useful factory baseline for a U.S.-market 2002–2014 EJ WRX/STI. It follows Subaru’s published 2014 schedule, which lists 7,500-mile oil service, 30,000-mile inspections and brake/clutch-fluid replacement, 45,000-mile air-filter replacement, 60,000-mile drivetrain-fluid inspection, 90,000-mile spark plugs, and a 105,000-mile timing-belt replacement. The 2014 schedule lists gear oil as an inspection at 60,000 miles rather than a universal replacement. A timing-belt sticker alone does not prove the water pump, tensioner, idlers, cam seals, and crank seal were serviced correctly.
