2002-2014 EJ WRX and STI

2015-2021 VA WRX

The VA WRX uses the FA20DIT and does not use the EJ timing-belt service pattern. Its budget is more likely to involve direct-injection inspection, spark plugs and ignition, oil-level monitoring, boost and intake plumbing, clutch wear on manual cars, and CVT-specific service on applicable trims.

The manual clutch deserves a separate inspection on a used VA WRX. The FA20DIT also needs a careful distinction between normal service and a suspected engine problem. 2022+ VB WRX

The VB WRX uses the FA24DIT. On a stock example with complete records, its budget is more likely to center on tires, brakes, fluids, filters, spark plugs, alignment, battery condition, and modifications than on age-related repairs.

The manual six-speed and Subaru Performance Transmission are separate systems. Their service requirements, fluids, symptoms, and repair paths should not be combined. When evaluating a used VB, pay attention to oil-level history, warning messages, cold-start behavior, clutch engagement, SPT operation if equipped, tuning documentation, and any evidence of overheating or charge-air leaks. A newer car can still need expensive diagnosis if its history is unclear.

Manual, CVT, and SPT cost differences

Manual WRX

A manual WRX has a clutch, release system, hydraulics, synchros, gears, axles, and differentials to evaluate. Clutch replacement is a normal wear repair, but the total job can grow if the flywheel, hydraulics, release parts, input shaft, or transmission has damage.
