Few four-cylinder engines have a signature like a classic WRX or STI. That uneven, rolling burble is the sound that makes an EJ-powered Subaru feel alive before the turbo has even come on strong. It is a big reason owners keep chasing the right header, catback, and tune years after the factory exhaust has gone quiet.
The rumble comes from the exhaust layout, not simply from the boxer engine. On US-market turbo EJ WRXs and STIs, unequal runner lengths send exhaust pulses to the collector in an off-beat pattern. The 2015-2021 VA WRX and 2022+ VB WRX use equal-length, twin-scroll-friendly FA layouts instead, so they start from a smoother, more even note.

Why unequal-length headers make the Subaru rumble
A header, also called an exhaust manifold, carries exhaust gas from each cylinder head to the turbocharger on a turbo WRX. In an equal-length header, each runner is designed so the pulse from each cylinder travels a closely matched distance before it joins the collector. In a UEL header, the paths are intentionally different.
The engine’s firing order has not changed. What changes is when those pulses arrive together after traveling through pipes of different lengths. The irregular grouping is what gives a UEL-equipped EJ its burbling, off-beat note. The boxer layout contributes to the character, but runner length and collector geometry are the reason one Subaru flat-four can rumble while another sounds comparatively even.
That distinction matters when shopping. A catback or axle-back can make an FA WRX louder and deeper while its factory equal-length manifold remains in place. A header changes more than volume: it is upstream of the turbo and part of the pulse and flow path that affect boost response.
Why FA20DIT and FA24DIT WRXs use equal-length headers
The VA WRX’s FA20DIT and VB WRX’s FA24DIT use twin-scroll turbochargers. A twin-scroll turbine housing is intended to receive separated exhaust-pulse groups through its two inlet paths. Consistent runner length and pulse timing is needed for the twin-scroll design to work as intended.
Subaru gave the FA20DIT and FA24DIT equal-length headers to feed those twin-scroll turbine inlets cleanly. A physical UEL header moves the FA WRX toward the classic sound, but it also changes the pulse behavior Subaru built the turbo system around. Sound is the reason to make that trade.
UEL versus EL headers on an EJ WRX or STI
An EJ WRX or STI already has the sound most people mean by “Subie rumble.” Keep the UEL layout when that character is central to the build. Move to an equal-length header when the turbo and calibration plan make the cleaner pulse path worth giving up the rumble.
Current EJ examples include GrimmSpeed’s UEL header, which lists 2002-2014 WRX and 2004-2021 STI applications, Tomei’s EJ single-scroll UEL and EL manifolds, and Killer B’s EJ Holy Header, an equal-length option.
Unequal-length headers for VA and VB WRXs
The FA market includes both sound-first and equal-length hardware. Tomei lists UEL and EL FA20DIT manifolds for the 2015-2021 VA WRX. For the VB, AFD currently lists a physical 2022-2026 UEL header, while GrimmSpeed lists an equal-length FA24 option.
Atlas UELHE: UEL sound without a physical UEL header
Atlas 2026.2 introduced Unequal Length Header Emulation, or UELHE, for its VA and VB WRX definition path. The software uses a tune to bring UEL character to an FA WRX, then blends back toward an equal-length operating envelope at wide-open throttle. NAMR’s 2026.2 release notes explain the feature.
For an FA20DIT or FA24DIT owner, UELHE offers a sound-first route without changing the physical manifold. The runners stay equal length, and the tune supplies the character. It will not turn every FA WRX and exhaust combination into the same thing as an EJ with a physical UEL header, but that is not the point. It lets you chase the rumble while keeping the factory-style manifold layout.

Installation, tuning, and emissions checks
A header job lives in a hot, cramped part of the car. Plan on fresh gaskets and hardware, room to work around the turbo and underbody, and a check for leaks after the first heat cycles.

For a modified WRX, hand the tuner the complete parts list before choosing the header. The map needs to match the whole combination, not just one exhaust part.

Keep a physical UEL header on an EJ when the rumble is part of why you bought the car. On an FA WRX, choose a physical UEL header when you want to make the sound change in the hardware, or choose Atlas UELHE when you want the character without replacing the manifold. Either route starts with the sound you want to hear every time the boost comes in.

Why do EJ and FA WRXs sound different?
The familiar EJ sound comes from unequal exhaust-runner lengths and the resulting off-beat pulse arrival at the collector. The VA FA20DIT and VB FA24DIT use equal-length, twin-scroll-oriented manifold layouts, so their exhaust pulses arrive more evenly.
Can a VA or VB WRX get the Subaru rumble?
Yes. A physical unequal-length header can change the exhaust-pulse character on a 2015+ WRX, but it is a sound-first change to a twin-scroll-oriented system. Supported VA and VB owners can also evaluate Atlas UELHE, which NAMR says emulates the UEL sound character in software while returning toward an equal-length operating envelope at wide-open throttle.
Does Atlas UELHE install unequal-length headers?
No. UELHE is an Atlas custom software feature, not an exhaust manifold. It leaves the physical header in place and changes the sound through the calibration.
Do unequal-length headers require a tune?
Plan a physical header with a calibration written for the exact engine, turbo, fuel, and remaining exhaust hardware. The header changes the turbo-side flow and pulse path, so it belongs in the tuning plan before installation.
Will an EJ header fit an FA WRX?
No. EJ and FA WRXs use different engine, turbo, manifold, up-pipe, exhaust, and fitment arrangements. Buy only a header explicitly listed for the exact model year, engine, market, and transmission.
