The VA and VB regular WRXs do not have the STI’s DCCD and front/rear limited-slip package. The VA CVT and VB SPT use Variable Torque Distribution AWD with an electronically controlled center system. The exact automatic hardware and calibration are generation-specific, so do not treat the VA CVT and VB SPT as interchangeable.
Both generations also use Active Torque Vectoring through Vehicle Dynamics Control. This is brake-based cornering assistance, not an STI-style torque-vectoring differential. Subaru’s 2022 materials describe the VB platform’s increased suspension-mounting rigidity and full inner-frame construction, but those chassis changes do not turn the regular WRX into an STI. Important changes within each generation
The generation label is only the first filter. Subaru made useful changes during both production runs.
VA WRX changes
- 2015-2017: original VA styling and early chassis calibration.
- 2018 refresh: revised front styling, suspension tuning, electric power steering, interior materials, and noise isolation. Subaru said the suspension changes were intended to improve steering stability and ride.
