The first WRX was a small Japanese-market Impreza with a turbo boxer engine, all-wheel drive, and rally ambitions written all over it. More than three decades later, the current VB is a larger sedan with a 2.4-liter engine and no WRX STI above it in Subaru’s U.S. lineup. The badge has lasted because Subaru keeps pairing a useful road car with a competition car’s sense of purpose.

These are broad family names, not every individual Subaru body code. GF and GG identify wagon forms, while GH and GR cover hatchback versions and GV identifies the later sedan. They are useful landmarks in the history, but the year, market, trim, engine, and transmission still define the exact car.
GC/GF: the small car that set the formula, 1992-2000
Subaru launched the Impreza WRX in Japan in 1992. It was a new way of packaging the company’s strengths: a compact body, a turbocharged boxer engine, and all-wheel drive. The road car and rally program developed alongside each other, which is why the original WRX feels so tied to the World Rally Championship era. The meaning of WRX begins there too: World Rally eXperimental.
The GC generation was available in sedan, coupe, and wagon forms. Its short dimensions and upright glass gave it a different energy from later cars. Even at rest, it looks like a modest compact. Add the hood scoop, wheels, and rear wing and the rally intent becomes obvious.
STI pushed the concept further with increasingly serious versions that changed far more than trim. The company developed complete cars around engine, drivetrain, suspension, and brake revisions, creating the pattern later STIs would follow. The 22B is the era’s most famous special: an extreme, wide-bodied celebration of Subaru’s 1997 WRC season, rather than a stand-in for every GC WRX. Its full story is in our Impreza 22B STI history.
The original WRX was not sold new in the United States. That gives the GC a special position in U.S. WRX culture: it is the source material, known through imports, rally footage, the 22B, and the later cars it inspired.
GD/GG: the WRX goes global, 2000-2007
The GD/GG generation took the WRX from cult object to mainstream performance-car presence. Subaru introduced the Impreza WRX to America for the 2002 model year, then brought the WRX STI over for 2004. The regular WRX established the audience; the STI showed what the factory could do when it turned the whole package up.
This is the Bugeye, Blobeye, and Hawkeye era. Those names describe the GD’s changing face, but they are also how many people place a car in the early U.S. timeline. The 2002-2003 Bugeye was the first factory U.S.-market WRX, arriving with distinctive round headlamps and an appearance unlike any other WRX. The 2004-2005 Blobeye facelift replaced them with a smoother, more conventional lamp shape just as the STI reached the U.S. market. For 2006-2007, the Hawkeye brought a sharper grille and angular lamps, giving the car the harder-edged look many people now associate with the classic GD.
The changes were more than a succession of headlights. The U.S. WRX used the 2.0-liter EJ205 through the Blobeye years, then moved to the 2.5-liter EJ255 with the Hawkeye for 2006-2007. The faces became shorthand for an era, but the engine changes tell the other half of the GD story.
The U.S.-market STI used the EJ257 from its 2004 debut, plus a six-speed transmission, Driver Controlled Center Differential, Brembo brakes, and a more focused chassis package. The GD brought the original formula to a much bigger audience. A practical Japanese sedan with a hood scoop was suddenly a familiar sight in American car culture.
GE/GH/GR/GV: hatchbacks and wide bodies, 2007-2014
For the next generation, Subaru added five-door hatchback bodies to the WRX and STI range. The cars gained real cargo usefulness without losing the turbo all-wheel-drive mission. The hatchback became one of the period’s signatures: practical when loaded up, unmistakably a WRX when the road stopped being straight.
Early U.S. 2008-2010 WRXs used narrow-body GE sedan and GH hatchback forms, while the STI arrived as a wide-body GR hatch. Subaru widened the regular WRX for 2011 and returned the STI sedan alongside the hatchback. By the end of the run, the WRX was broader, lower, and more overtly performance-minded than the compact sedan that started the line.
U.S. WRXs remained EJ255 cars and STIs remained EJ257 cars, so the familiar two-tier lineup stayed intact. The hatchback made the WRX formula more adaptable, while the later wide-body cars gave the regular WRX some of the visual drama that had previously belonged more clearly to the STI.
VA: one shape, two very different mechanical paths, 2015-2021
For 2015, Subaru dropped the Impreza name from the WRX and STI and made them a dedicated performance model line. They still looked like close relatives, but the regular WRX and STI now followed different paths under the hood.
The regular WRX used the 2.0-liter direct-injection FA20DIT. The STI retained the 2.5-liter EJ257. The WRX could be ordered with a six-speed manual or Sport Lineartronic CVT; the STI stayed manual-only with its DCCD-equipped six-speed and STI-specific differential, brake, and chassis hardware.
Earlier STIs had always carried more drivetrain and chassis hardware, but the VA made the divide more fundamental. The regular WRX was Subaru’s new turbo-direct-injection route; the STI was the final evolution of the EJ-powered, manual-only formula.
With the VA, “WRX or STI?” became a question of more than power, wheels, or a rear wing. The two cars used different engine architectures and different drivetrains. The Subaru WRX engine guide maps the engines; VA vs. VB follows the regular WRX into the next generation.
VB: the WRX continues after the STI, 2022-current
The VB arrived for 2022 with the 2.4-liter direct-injection FA24DIT, the Subaru Global Platform, and a sedan-only U.S. body. Subaru rates the current 2026 U.S.-market WRX at 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft, with a six-speed manual or Subaru Performance Transmission depending on trim. Its greater displacement gives the current regular WRX a different low-rpm character from the VA’s 2.0-liter car.
There is no production VB WRX STI. Subaru ended the WRX STI after the VA generation, leaving the VB as the current factory WRX rather than the entry point to a higher STI model. It is a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sport sedan without the old two-car hierarchy.

What connects every generation
The details changed dramatically: GC compactness, GD global reach, the GR/GV hatchback and wide-body years, the VA split, and the VB without an STI. The core appeal has stayed intact. Every WRX generation turns a practical Subaru shape into something with all-wheel-drive traction, turbocharged response, and a reason to take the long way home.
A GC8, Bugeye, GR hatch, VA STI, and VB WRX are not interchangeable cars. They trace a lineage that began with Subaru putting rally-car intent into a road car and finding an audience that wanted exactly that.
