WRX parts are easy to buy one at a time. That is also how a build loses direction. The intake does not match the eventual tune, the new wheels complicate the suspension setup, and the exhaust that sounded good in a video drones through every commute. Before long, nearly new parts are being replaced because they never belonged in the same build.
The best WRX mods are the ones that move your exact car toward a clear goal. A 2015-2021 VA WRX, a 2022+ VB WRX, and a 2015-2021 VA STI require different power parts and calibration strategies. A daily driver, autocross car, and track car also need different priorities even when they share a chassis.
This guide covers U.S.-market 2015-2021 VA WRX models with the FA20DIT, 2022+ VB WRX models with the FA24DIT, and 2015-2021 VA STI models with the EJ257. Earlier WRX and STI owners can use the same goal-first method, but their engine, transmission, hub, brake, and tuning details need an application-specific plan. Choose your WRX build path
Start with what you want the car to do better. “More modified” is not a destination. A quiet daily with a tighter shifter, a responsive back-road car, and a track car that stays consistent through a full session should not share one shopping list.

These paths can overlap, but one should lead. If the WRX commutes five days for every one day in the mountains, preserve its road manners and add the extra capability around them.
Before buying WRX mods
Before shopping, find out what is already on the car. A stock-looking engine bay does not prove the ECU is running a stock calibration, especially on a used WRX that may have been returned to factory hardware before sale.
- Identify the car. Confirm model year, engine, transmission, trim, brakes, wheel bolt pattern, and current suspension. A VA WRX and VA STI share a body generation, not a powertrain or complete parts catalog.
- Inventory every modification. Photograph intake plumbing, charge pipes, boost-control hoses, exhaust connections, suspension labels, wheel markings, and engine-bay catch-can or separator routing.
- Identify the calibration. Record the tuning platform, current map, required fuel, tuner, and the hardware named for that map. Do not clear learned values or flash an unknown map just to make the car look stock.
- Check its condition. Scan stored and pending codes, check fluid levels, inspect for leaks, confirm four compatible tires, and investigate clutch, transmission, brake, cooling, or engine symptoms before adding load.
- Set the limits. Decide whether the car must pass local inspection, retain commuter comfort, run a particular fuel, remain in an autocross class, or handle repeated track sessions.
- Talk to the tuner before buying tune-dependent parts. Ask which intake, boost-control hardware, fuel configuration, intercooler layout, sensors, and emissions-compliant exhaust path are supported on the car.

Best first mods for a daily-driven WRX
The best first mods are usually the ones you notice on every drive. Better tire response, a clean shift, and the right exhaust note can change the car without turning it into a project that is always waiting for the next part.
Tires and alignment
Tires affect braking, steering response, wet grip, noise, and ride all at once. Match the tire category to the weather and use, then align the car for predictable handling without sacrificing the tire life your commute requires. Do not use wheel width as a substitute for tire planning. Choose the tire, brake clearance, ride height, and alignment range first; then use the WRX wheel fitment guide to find a wheel that supports them.
Shifter and driver controls
A shift stop, bushing, short-shift component, or weighted knob can make a manual WRX feel more deliberate without touching engine output. Stiffer engine, pitch-stop, and transmission mounts can reduce drivetrain movement, but the cabin receives more vibration and mechanical sound in return. That trade is easier to accept in a weekend car than in a WRX that idles in traffic every morning.
Exhaust sound
For a sound-first build, an axle-back or cat-back changes the exhaust behind the emissions hardware. An axle-back is the simpler route when the main goal is more volume. A cat-back replaces the full rear section and offers more control over the resonator, mufflers, and overall tone.
Judge the finished system, not one part in isolation. A cat-back that is comfortable behind the factory front exhaust can become much louder after other exhaust changes. Cold starts and steady highway speed reveal far more about livability than a few revs beside a parked car.
Brakes for street use
A daily-driven WRX rarely needs a big-brake kit as its first brake modification. Start by inspecting pad thickness, rotor condition, fluid condition, hoses, and caliper operation. If the pedal and stopping performance are consistent in normal use, spend the first handling budget on tires before replacing working factory hardware.
Pads and fluid should match the heat the car actually sees. A street pad needs useful cold behavior and tolerable noise; a track-oriented pad trades some of that civility for higher-temperature performance. Repeated fade at an event calls for a different pad and fluid decision than a soft pedal during ordinary driving, which may indicate a condition or service issue. Maintenance and supporting mods
Modification does not create one universal WRX maintenance schedule. Model year, engine, transmission, installed hardware, fuel, mileage, and use determine what needs attention. Begin with Subaru’s schedule for the car, then shorten an inspection or service interval only when the operating conditions, tuner, fluid analysis, or component manufacturer gives you a reason. Check the oil level often enough to learn the individual engine’s consumption, and inspect new intake, charge, coolant, oil, and exhaust connections after installation. Logs can help a tuner investigate a change in boost, fueling, or knock response, but watching a few Accessport values is not a substitute for diagnosing a mechanical symptom.
AOS and catch-can systems
An air-oil separator or catch can changes how oil mist and condensed vapor are handled in the crankcase-ventilation path. The plumbing, drain arrangement, cold-weather behavior, and maintenance requirements vary by system and engine. Oil control and cooling
Oil pans, baffles, pickups, and oil coolers belong in the plan when the car’s application justifies them. Sustained track use and high lateral load present a different oil-control problem from commuting, while an oil cooler adds lines, fittings, thermostat behavior, pressure drop, warm-up considerations, and more potential leak points. Use valid temperature and pressure data, the engine application, and the intended event use to decide what is needed instead of installing the entire catalog as a generic reliability package.
VA WRX build paths: 2015-2021
The VA WRX pairs the FA20DIT with either a six-speed manual or Lineartronic CVT. It is not simply a less powerful VA STI. The engine, turbo layout, transmission, differentials, brakes, and tuning options are different.
VA daily-driver path
- Complete the baseline inspection and catch up the applicable maintenance.
- Choose tires for the actual weather, then align the car.
- Improve the controls with a shift stop, knob, or other transmission-specific part if the factory feel bothers you.
- Choose an axle-back or restrained cat-back if sound is the priority.
- Add springs or street-oriented dampers if the lower ride height or tighter body control is worth the effect on ride and alignment.
- For more engine response, settle on a supported calibration before ordering an intake or boost-control hardware.
An aftermarket intake changes the airflow path and can alter the mass-airflow reading the ECU uses. Match the intake to the selected map or tuner’s requirements. The VA and VB WRX intake guide covers the available layouts and their tuning needs.
VA handling path
Start with tires and alignment, then drive the car and identify what is still missing. Lowering springs reduce wheel gap and change the response while retaining a simpler damper arrangement. Coilovers add height adjustment and may add damping or top-mount adjustment, but they also require more setup and eventual servicing. Use sway bars, end links, bushings, or control arms to correct a defined balance, movement, or alignment issue. Installing every stiff part at once makes it hard to know which one sharpened the car and which one added noise, bind, or an unwanted handling balance.
VA power path
For a VA power build, start with the calibration route and buy the hardware it supports. The combination may include an intake, intercooler, charge piping, and boost-control hardware, but the map or custom tuner determines which parts belong together.
Today’s off-the-shelf packages do not necessarily match the old intake-and-j-pipe definition of Stage 2. Before buying an aftermarket j-pipe, confirm that a suitable calibration is available and that the setup can be used legally where the car is registered. An upgraded intercooler makes sense when charge temperatures, repeated pulls, or a new piping layout demand it. A stock daily driver does not need one simply because it appears on a typical mod list. Treat ethanol sensing, fuel delivery, and calibration as one system. A box labeled “flex fuel” does not guarantee it includes every sensor, pump, injector, controller, or map needed for your model year. VA CVT path
Build around the VA CVT instead of copying a six-speed parts list. The tuning platform, map, engine hardware, and transmission strategy all need explicit CVT support. Added torque, repeated launches, and sustained heat create different limits from those of the manual gearbox.

VB WRX build paths: 2022+
The VB WRX combines the FA24DIT with a six-speed manual or Subaru Performance Transmission, depending on trim. Its engine management, electronic wastegate, charge-air hardware, exhaust, body, and suspension differ from the VA. A similar-looking part is not necessarily interchangeable.
VB daily-driver path
- Choose tires and alignment for the weather and roads.
- Improve shift feel or cabin touch points where the stock car bothers you.
- Choose exhaust volume based on cold-start and highway tolerance.
- Decide whether the factory ride height or body control actually needs changing.
- Pick the tuning platform and fuel before buying an intake or boost-control part.
- Keep manual and SPT parts, maps, and expectations separate.

VB handling path
For handling, begin with the tire and alignment just as you would on a VA. Then name the behavior you want to change: ride height, body motion, front-to-rear balance, brake performance, or appearance. That answer points toward dampers, springs, bars, alignment hardware, pads, or simply a better tire.
Before modifying a factory performance trim, inventory its brakes, dampers, wheels, tires, and electronic features. A part listed for a base VB may duplicate equipment already fitted or create a clearance issue on another trim.
VB power path
Settle on an off-the-shelf package, custom e-tune, local dyno tune, or supported open-tuning workflow before assembling the parts list. With the tuner and power goal decided, match the intake, intercooler, charge pipe, boost control, exhaust, fuel system, and sensors. Oversized parts may leave room for a future build, but they can add cost and complexity without helping the current turbo or fuel target.
VB SPT path
The SPT is not a manual WRX with different pedals. Its behavior, temperature management, control strategy, and available maps need their own approach. Confirm support for the model year and tuning package. For repeated launches, track sessions, or a large torque increase, settle the transmission-temperature and calibration limits before ordering engine parts.
VA STI build paths: 2015-2021
The VA STI retains the EJ257, STI six-speed, Driver Controlled Center Differential, front and rear limited-slip differentials, and STI brake hardware. It needs its own build path even though it shares the VA body generation with the 2015-2021 WRX.
STI daily-driver path
Begin with condition, tires, alignment, and driver controls. A stock or lightly modified STI already has a substantial drivetrain and brake package. Replacing those parts because they appear on a generic WRX list can add harshness without improving anything the driver actually noticed.

STI handling and track path
Put tires, alignment, pads, fluid, and seat time ahead of more power. On an older STI, inspect the wheel bearings, ball joints, bushings, dampers, end links, and cooling system instead of replacing only the most visible component.
At the track, record tire pressures and temperatures, brake wear, available fluid-temperature data, and how the car changes over a session. Those observations make the next cooling, alignment, damper, or brake decision far less speculative. A street car attending an occasional track day does not need the same setup as a trailered time-attack car.
STI power path
Set the turbo goal, fuel, tuner, and emissions-compliant exhaust path before buying the intake, boost-control, intercooler, or fuel-system parts. EJ257 fuel and turbo requirements do not carry over from the direct-injected FA engines. Injector, pump, sensor, and boost-control choices must match the target and calibration.

This is where thinking through the complete build pays off. A bargain part becomes expensive when it leads to a second calibration, replacement piping, another alignment, or a new set of wheels six months later.
Common WRX modification mistakes
Buying parts before choosing a tuner
Your tuner may require a different intake, boost-control solenoid, sensor set, fuel configuration, or software platform. Send over the full parts list before ordering, including part numbers and everything already fitted to the car.
Treating the VA WRX and STI as the same car
They need separate engine, turbo, fuel, transmission, brake, differential, and tuning plans. The shared VA name helps with some body and interior parts, but it does not make the mechanical builds interchangeable.
Lowering before choosing wheels and tires
Ride height affects bump travel, alignment, and tire clearance. Work out the wheel, tire, suspension, and alignment combination together instead of discovering after mounting the tires that the final setup needs different hardware.
Using horsepower as the entire goal
Dyno type, correction method, fuel, temperature, drivetrain, and test conditions all affect the reported number. Two cars with the same peak output can deliver torque, manage heat, find traction, and demand service very differently. Build for how the car will be used, not for a screenshot.
Copying an old Stage 2 parts list
Package names, available maps, emissions rules, and supported hardware have changed. An old forum signature is not a dependable shopping list; use the documentation for the map and hardware available now.
Adding every supporting mod automatically
Every supporting modification should have a job. Name the temperature, pressure, airflow, movement, traction, braking, or fitment issue it addresses. If the build does not have that need yet, the part can wait.
Emissions and inspection planning
For a U.S. street car, settle the emissions-compliant route before buying exhaust or tuning hardware. Federal law prohibits removing or disabling emissions controls and the use of defeat devices, while state inspection and parts rules may be more restrictive. That affects j-pipes, downpipes, catalytic converters, oxygen-sensor behavior, diagnostic trouble codes, and the functions available in tuning software. Verify the legality of the part and calibration where the car will be registered and driven. A “track use” label does not make the same part legal on a street-driven car.
Build the car you will actually use
The best WRX build is not the one with the longest parts list. It is the one in which the tires, suspension, brakes, engine hardware, fuel, calibration, and transmission all suit the way the car is driven.
Pick one goal, work out the complete combination, and divide it into steps that leave the car usable between installs. Filling a cart in one night is more exciting. Driving a WRX whose parts actually work together is better.
