The Subaru Impreza WRX first appeared in North America in 2002. The car was based on the Subaru Impreza that was built to compete in the 1992 World Rally Championship. Subaru claims WRX means "World Rally eXperimental," referring to the car's rally heritage.
This first generation made 227hp and 217ft-lbs of torque. In 2004, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI made its way to North America, making 300hp and 300 ft-lbs of torque, a significant increase over the standard Impreza WRX.
In 2009, the Subaru WRX got its biggest increase in power ever, up to 265 hp. The torque was increased to 244ft-lbs. This generation, the WRX STI got a smaller power increase, up to 305hp.
In 2015, the Subaru WRX underwent a major refresh. The EJ series engine was replaced with a new FA20DIT engine. This brought a minor power increase up to 268hp, and torque up to 258ft-lbs. The STI remained the same this generation, with the EJ engine, making the same horsepower. In 2018, a minor refresh of STI's engine tuning and internals brought it to 310 hp.
